Don't Install Avast! on 5308

It causes a lot of problems. I don't think it likes the Sidebar either. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

Thanks, Andre. So far, it seems Vista doesn't care for any of the free AVs. Sigh...

I installed Avast 4.6 Home Edition (and Disabled Web Scan), and it (Avast) has worked just fine so far, no problems to report.

P.S. I did this on my other computer (a Compaq Pentium 3 933 MHz Computer with 256 MB's of RAM, and 64 MB's of Video RAM). Like I said, "I Have No Problem's to Report."

P.P.S. The Compaq Pentium 3 Computer is indeed running Windows Vista Build 5308 CTP.

Hi Kevin,
Apparently it works only for 32-bit Vista. I believe Andre tried installing on a 64-bit Vista Build 5308. None of the providers was working for me on a 64-bit Vista Build 5308. The installation was fine but after reboot, it failed by prompting that the providers were not accessible.

Doesn't work--I believe this only installs on XP thus far at least.

So far the only problem I've had with Avast Home is that I need to allow it to run as admin at login time. No other problems yet. -- Pierre Szwarc Paris, France

Turns out that I was wrong, Avast 4.6 Home Edition Completely Trashed my Windows Vista 5308.17 CTP Installation Yesterday! I have now Reverted the computer back to Windows XP Service Pack 2 with IE 7.0.5296.0 Beta!

Yah, mine was working for a while too. After about a week, w/o warning, random processes started freezing - and couldn't be stopped through task mgr. Eventually, I wasn't able to save any files nor do any other functions related to file i/o (which is just about everything :) I had to blow away the entire configuration and reinstall.
After taking a lot of care and only installing one app at a time, I discovered that the Avast install seemed to be the cause of the problems.
It's a shame too cauz the Security Center seemed so happy with everything in the green... "Kevin John Panzke" wrote:

See my post in the Vista General. Just tried a fresh copy of Symantec Corporate SAV 10 64-bit on my Vista Feb 06 CTP and a got a nice BSOD loop. Had to restart in Last Known Good to recover. / John
